“How dare you?!”
Greta Thunberg’s statement at the 2019 UN climate summit resonated around the world and few were indifferentto it. The then-sixteen-year-old girl, whose activities began with regular protests in front of the Swedish parliament, managed to inspire thousands of young people to protest against climate change and attract the attention of even the most dogged climate change deniers to ecological topics. To many, she became a burning torch, an adored icon of eco-activism, a hero of her time, fighting against the system. For others, she became a threat disrupting plans for the peaceful retirement and comfortable way of life they’d been working towards their entire lives. Although he does not attempt to conceal his admiration for the actions of the young activist, Slovak artist Martin Toldy’s installation sees her as an icon of eco-pop-culture, following the psychological effect of her appearances.
As the exhibition title itself suggests, the site-specific installation with wooden cross structures covered in yellow raincoats (a reference to Greta Thunberg’s now iconic item of clothing), with its graveyard atmosphere with scarecrows instead of tombstones, is reminiscent of a nightmare.
The artist was approached for collaboration on the basis of the nomination within the frame of the internal opencall organised by MeetFactory.
